Freestanding pavilions, gazebos, workshops, detached garages, and accessory outbuildings need a complete structural set — gravity, lateral, and foundation — without leaning on an adjacent building. We design the whole thing as a standalone system in wood or steel.

Freestanding Structures — questions, answered

Do small accessory structures actually need a stamped engineer?
It depends on size, occupancy, and jurisdiction. Most permit offices require a stamp once you exceed prescriptive IRC limits, span more than the code tables allow, or build in a high seismic or wind zone — we design for any of those.
Can you design a pavilion for assembly use (weddings, events)?
Yes. Assembly occupancy changes the live load, the risk category, and often the lateral design — we set those at kickoff and the drawings reflect the right load combinations.
Heavy snow load — does that change the framing much?
Often substantially. Ground snow above ~40 psf typically drives member sizes and connection design more than wind or seismic; we size the roof framing to the site's ASCE 7 ground snow and exposure.
Can you provide alternate framing options at the proposal stage?
Yes. If wood vs. steel, or glulam vs. dimensional lumber, is open, we can scope a comparison so you can pick the system before we commit to the full design.
